MARTY CONVERSION

The build of our car is extensive, with each modification carefully thought out and planned. Below you can find the things we have done or bought with weight as a primary consideration for each modification, as was limited interior space. 

GOAL 1: STRONG 4x4, BIG ENOUGH TO SLEEP IN 

  • 2007 Toyota Landcruiser HZJ78 

  • 4.2L 6 cylinder, 1HZ engine 

  • Five-speed manual gearbox 

  • Two-speed transfer gearbox 

  • Air-conditioning 

  • Power steering 

GOAL 2: EXTREMELY CAPABLE OFF-ROAD

Two years on the road, with different conditions and different kind of roads requires a very strong 4×4 vehicle. We chose de Land Cruiser Troophy as it is a very strong and reliable car and it is an easy car to fix in every part of the world. I have added: 

:

  • Brakes:

    • Bendix Ultimate Front brake pads 

    • AT412 Performance disc set 

  • Protection & Recovery: Going duo for two years, we need to be able to get ourselfs unstuck.

    • Warn Winch 9000 

    • Waffle Boards 2x 

    • Elastic Towe Rope 

    • D-Shackle 

    • Hi-Lift Jack 

    • Shovel 

    • Spot Gen3: when you are really lost 

    • Fire Extinguisher

  • Snorkel:

    • Washable and reusable Air filter 

  • Lighting: Inside and out, being able to see is a must

    • 4 hella fog lights 

 

GOAL 3: INTERIOR LIVING SPACE

Two years travelling is not a vacation, it’s a lifestyle. We're building our LandCruiser into a house on wheels with a comfortable bed and a nice living space – to be able to escape the bugs, the rain, or even just escape the world for an evening. The build and design is centred around a Pop up roof and interior cabinets we designed and built.

 

  • Pop-up rooftop, Alu-Cab Herculas Conversion Gen3

    • Tent conversion. Flip-up. Time to erect ±23 seconds. Time to close ±30 seconds 

    • 2 Stork lights for reading 

    • 4 Diffused LED lights 

    • Waterproof Canvas ​

  • Interior: allows for standing, sitting and sleeping in the rear of the Land Cruiser 

    • Custom built cabinets for camper from Plywood 

    • Cabinets can be locked 

    • Rooftop can be moved all the way up to give more space 

    • Custom Cushions for Living Area 

    • Seating area easily converts to second bed 

 

 

GOAL 4: IMPROVED SLEEPING, COOKING AND EATING

Two years from South Africa to Egypte, from Uruguay to Alaska on our previous expedition taught us a lot.  We love camping, varied food and cooking. We want to sleep up off the ground out of the mud. With that in mind, the following modifications where made:

  •  Fridge:

    • 60 L, Luna Fridge with freezer 

  • Kitchen & Cooking:

    • Coleman Gasoline Stove. 

    • Base 2-Pot Set and Frying Pan 

    • Dutch Oven 

    • oBialetti Moka Express Percolator. For that morning cup 

    • Drop Down Table 

    • Small Blender 

  • Awning: Sun shade over the kitchen area at the rear which can handle strong winds. 

    • Shadow Awning (Ezi-Awn Batwing 270°) Time to erect ±30 seconds. Time to close ±45 seconds

    • Aluminium construction 

    • Imported reflective fabric 

  • Sleeping area

    • USB powered fan for the warm nights 

    • Gooze Wool Blanket and Pillows 

    • Linen Fitted Sheets and Pillowcases for alll seasons

    • Extra topper mattress

GOAL 5: ABILITY TO BE SELF-CONTAINED FOR WEEKS AT A TIME

 

Our aim is to get off the beaten path once in a while, sowe need to be able to support ourselves for a few days:

 

  • Water System: Water is the number one limiter for days without resupply

    • 40 liter drinking Water Tank

    • 40 liter normal Water Tank 

  • Batteries: Isolated batteries mean I can run the fridge for days without starting the engine

    • Discovery EV31 AGM Battery 

    • Mounted in Battery bracket 

  • On Board Air Compressor & Tire Repair: self-repair is a must

    • LCKMP12 - ARB Compressor, Portable (You need to change the tire pressure constantly) 

    • Puncture Repair Kit 

GOAL 6: SECURE STORAGE FOR ALL MY STUFF

To Keep our valuables safe and especially the car we have built in the following: 

  • Security/Locks o Lockable Security Console 

    • Hidden compartments 

    • BearLock, fully integrated

  • Navigation: I drove AK-Argentina without a GPS. I’m not doing that again.

  • Electrical: I don’t like inverters – they are inefficient, heavy and hot.

    • Victron Phoenix 800W Pure Sine Inverter which is connected with a Bluetooth dongle 

    • Battery Charger 25A 12-24V 

    • BlueSea 6Way Fused Circuit Breaker
